ApisProtect Wins 2021 Agritech Start-Up Award at Innovation Arena Awards

For the second year in a row, the 2021 Enterprise Ireland Innovation Arena Awards, in association with the National Ploughing Association (NPA), took place online with shortlisted innovators pitching their pioneering designs to a virtual judging panel over the course of two days. More than 50 entries were received for this year’s awards competition — but the judges were all abuzz for ApisProtect, and this female-led, Cork-based technology company flew away with the 2021 Agritech Start-Up award.

Using a combination of IoT (Internet of Things) and AI (Artificial Intelligence) technologies, ApisProtect brings groundbreaking technology to commercial beekeeping. The company’s platform remotely extracts and interprets data from hives and converts this data into meaningful insight about operations. These knowledge points enable beekeepers to deploy their labor and resources to maximum effect, creating an extra $100 of value per hive annually. ApisProtect is providing the most accurate, reliable, and beekeeper-friendly technology in this market.

“The strong themes emerging from this year’s Innovation Arena Award entries are a focus on farm efficiency and a concentration on how to protect our natural resources,” said Leo Clancy, CEO, Enterprise Ireland. “Over the last few years, we’ve seen growing trends towards digitalization of the sector, with increased capacity for capturing more data, interpreting it, and using these insights for decision-making. The uptake of such technologies on the farm will have significant benefits generating efficiency and sustainability in food production.”

The global bee population — which is vital for the environment, human health, and global food security — is declining and under continued threats, including climate change, biocide use, pathogens, and suboptimal management practices. By capitalizing on innovative, award-winning academic research, ApisProtect uses cutting-edge science, engineering, and advanced business processes to bring honey bee-saving technology to every corner of the globe.

“The ingenuity and talent of Irish farm experts, entrepreneurs, and businesses are once again captured by this year’s Innovation Arena Award winners,” said Minister Damien English, while announcing the winners. “In line with Government policy on Climate action, the positive impacts that Irish innovation can have on future global agriculture, particularly in relation to environmental, sustainability and digitalization solutions, are inspiring. There are significant opportunities for our agricultural sector in overseas markets and the potential to drive economic growth. I would encourage farmers and companies to take advantage of Ireland’s reputation for innovation in agriculture, and to explore opportunities to realize their global ambition in new markets.”

Enterprise Ireland’s Innovation Arena showcases groundbreaking agriculture-related products and innovations from Irish agri-companies at the National Ploughing Championships. The work ApisProtect does to improve the health and wellbeing of our population and planet with the support of Enterprise Ireland will continue to benefit us all globally.
